During the day or night, if your car breaks down on the road, pull all the way off the road and out of traffic. Turn your emergency flashers on. Lift the hood to signal an emergency and tie a white cloth to the door handle.

If you can't get completely off the road, stop where other drivers will have a clear view of you from behind. Never stop just over a hill or just around a curve. Give other drivers plenty of warning by placing flares and a warning triangle 200 to 300 feet behind your vehicle. If you don't have flares or a warning triangle, stand by the side of the road well back from your car, wave traffic around you with a white cloth.
