Place the head or top of the ladder against a firm, even and secure top to prevent the ladder from shifting. The two rails should be supported evenly. Always place the base of a straight ladder one foot away from the wall or structure for every four feet of ladder height up to the support point.

The area around the base of the ladder should be clear of debris, tools or any other loose objects. Make sure that any power cords are run behind the ladder so they’re not trip hazards. After checking for overhead electrical wires, place the foot or base of a straight ladder on a firm, level non-slip surface.
