Crane Setup

The fundamentals of crane setup.

Topics include:

  • Job conditions
  • Type of crane
  • Importance of level operation
  • Ground conditions and supporting surface
  • With basic consideration for working range, wire rope capacity (strength) and lift capacity.

Whenever working close to a building, expect the ground to be soft. Uncompacted backfill will lie around the foundation.

If the ground is especially soft or water logged requiring mats, be sure to check the crane's base often, as settling will occur that could require outrigger adjustments.

Ground conditions change throughout the year making the ground bearing capacity and stability difficult to judge due to frozen and frost laden conditions. When in doubt, base estimates on worst possible conditions.

If the crane is to be set-up in flowing water, the errosion effects of the water on the ground around the machine's support system represents a serious hazard unless the crane is moved frequently. In areas of high water tables or areas subject to flooding, the crane may require deep foundations or ground fill.
