and universal means of communication between deck personnel and the crane
operator is hand signals. On some rigs and platforms, the crane operator
and assisting deckhands can communicate verbally by using two-way wireless
systems. However, electronic systems are not always available, they can
be cumbersome, they can be drowned out by noisy machinery, and they are
