MAKING SAFETY MORE THAN A PRIORITY
Charlie
Morecraft and Scott Geller, PhD:
“The Dock Worker meets the Doctor”

The presenters: Charlie Morecraft, world-renowned motivational safety speaker and highly respected expert in safety, and Scott Geller, PhD., Professor of Psychology at Virginia Tech and Senior Partner of Safety Performance Solutions, a leading-edge firm specializing in behavior-based safety training and consulting.
In 2003 (to be repeated in 2004) Charlie and Scott presented LIVE to the Annual Conferences at the VPPPA and the NSC. The video is the outcome of the two highly engaging programs.
Dr. Geller’s approach is educational. Charlie’s is experiential. Both are ultimately focused on people. Both agree, when someone approaches safety as a personal matter, they are much more likely to take actions consistent with being safe, and getting home at the end of the day to enjoy the family.
Scott distinguishes RESPONSIBILITY from ACCOUNTABILITY. Responsible people ask themselves: “What can I do?” Scott discusses what he calls “avoiding failure vs. creating success”. He presents an approach of “people-based safety as opposed to simply behavior-based” safety.

Charlie is the guy who “lived to tell the story”. He had the attitude that “nothing is going to happen to me”. He brings his personal, emotional, experience to the presentation. Once you have heard Charlie’s story and his passion for people and their families, you cannot help but be moved to change behaviors. People are left in the presence of the personal effects of safety, not only on themselves, but on their families as well. He leaves you feeling “responsible”.
They are both committed to waking people up from their complacency. They both acknowledge that the culture of safety needs to stay focused on people. Giving someone a “trinket” for not getting in an accident, is the “wrong” approach. “Trinkets” don’t make people safe. People make people safe.
Although Charlie and Scott
approach safety from two very different backgrounds, together they present a
dynamic, engaging conversation, which will inspire employees and management
alike.
