Chemical protective clothing is a single or multi-piece garment designed to protect the wearer from direct contact with specified materials. When dealing with hazardous materials, chemical protective clothing is critical to guard against the effects of toxic or corrosive products which could enter the body through inhalation or skin absorption, or cause tissue damage upon contact with the skin.
NFPA and EPA recognize basic levels of protection based upon the nature of the hazard. Because physical properties of chemicals differ, no one garment can provide protection against all hazards. Many factors must be taken into consideration before selecting a particular CPC ensemble for a task.

It also lists the key components of a chemical protective clothing ensemble and discusses appropriate properties of each. The concepts of permeation, penetration and degradation as they relate to fabrics are explained, as well as methods for detecting signs of suit failure.
