About
Chemical Protective Clothing
Chemical protective clothing is a single or multi-piece garment designed to protect
the wearer from direct contact with specified materials. When dealing with hazardous
materials, chemical protective clothing is critical to guard against the effects of toxic
or corrosive products which could enter the body through inhalation or skin absorption, or
cause tissue damage upon contact with the skin. NFPA
and EPA recognize basic levels of protection based upon the nature of the hazard. Because
physical properties of chemicals differ, no one garment can provide protection against all
hazards. Many factors must be taken into consideration before selecting a particular CPC
ensemble for a task.
A comprehensive chemical protective clothing course such as
outlined in this program can help make workers and emergency responders safe and
effective, an important step in keeping the community, the environment and the workplace
free from contamination by hazardous materials. |
About
the film
"Chemical Protective Clothing" discusses
performance standards for vapor protective suits, liquid splash protective suits and
support function protective garments, the three levels of protection approved by the
National Fire Protection Association, and explains the factors which determine selection
of a suit. It also lists the key components of a chemical protective clothing ensemble and
discusses appropriate properties of each. The concepts of permeation, penetration and
degradation as they relate to fabrics are explained, as well as methods for detecting
signs of suit failure. Wearers are taught the
correct procedure for donning and doffing CPC and for decontamination. The importance of
medical monitoring is stressed, and the various types of heat illnesses described.
Other topics covered include limitations of CPC, EPA levels
of protection, inspecting and testing of garments, proper storage and maintenance of
garments and record keeping. (29 minutes)
