About
inorganic oxidizers
Inorganic oxidizers
are hazardous materials which are used widely in agriculture and industry.
When heated, these highly reactive products decompose and give off
oxidizing gases which accelerate the burning of combustible material.
They may react violently or explode when they are mixed with ordinary
combustibles. Closed containers may rupture violently when heated.
It is important
for workers who handle oxidizers to be well trained in their hazard
properties and safe handling techniques, and that emergency responders
who may respond to an incident involving oxidizers be trained in proper
response tactics.
About
the film
"Inorganic
Oxidizers," the tenth program in the award winning HazChem
training series, teaches the basic hazard properties of liquid and
solid oxidizers, as well as safety techniques for handling an emergency
involving these hazardous chemicals. Focusing on ammonium nitrate,
calcium hypochlorite, and nitric acid, the film tells where oxidizers
might be found and what hazards are specific to each chemical. It
discusses symptoms of exposure, and tells how to assist victims who
have been contaminated by oxidizers.

The
program stresses safe storage and handling procedures, warning that
oxidizers should be stored separately from incompatible materials and
other oxidizers. Emergency response situations are also discussed, covering
first response, size-up, protective clothing and breathing apparatus,
isolating the scene, controlling vapors, containing the spill, and evacuation.
Other topics covered include containers, DOT placarding, NFPA markings,
protecting water supplies, fire fighting, decontamination and cleaning
up spills. Exciting footage of incidents involving oxidizers is included.
About
the HazChem Series
Each film in the
HazChem Series focuses on a different product or group of products.
Programs combine footage of actual incidents with action-packed, realistic
training sequences. The films are designed to provide training to
persons who are expected to respond to an emergency involving these
hazardous materials.
HazChem films
have been the winners of numerous awards for both filmmaking excellence
and technical content. Among the honors received by HazChem programs
are the prestigious Cine Golden Eagle award, the Society for Technical
Communication Award of Excellence, the Telly Award, and the Silver
Apple Award from the National Education Film and Video Festival.
