About decontamination at terrorism incidents
In the event of a terrorist attack or other emergency involving mass contamination by weapons of mass destruction or toxic industrial materials, emergency responders must be prepared to decontaminate large numbers of casualties. Speed will be critical to minimize further injury to victims and to prevent cross contamination. Emergency responders and hospital staff should understand the differences between technical and mass decontamination, and should be trained in mass decon techniques.

About the program
“Mass Decon" provides training for firefighters, emergency medical service personnel, hospital staff, the military, and others who may be assigned to carry out decontamination activities at terrorist incidents. This timely program explains the reasons for mass decontamination and illustrates techniques and procedures.

Using footage of realistic training scenarios, “Mass Decon” portrays emergency personnel responding to incidents involving terrorist agents. The program follows responders as they take steps to identify the agents involved, conduct extensive size-ups of incident scenes, set up decon areas, prepare decon solutions and apply decon water using one & two engine configurations, ladder configuration, and bridge configurations.

The program also portrays triage of victims and dealing with non-ambulatory victims, monitoring for radiation, and properly dealing with modesty issues and contaminated clothing. The importance of pre-incident planning for cold weather is stressed, and there is a comprehensive discussion of hypothermia symptoms. Other topics covered include follow-up monitoring, alternative decon set-ups, controlling run-off, mass decontamination for medical facilities, and terminating the incident.

A Leader's Guide is included with the program that includes testing materials, ideas for field and classroom exercises, a copy of the script for reference and additional information on decontamination.
