Working in Hot Environments

HEAT! Working in Hot Environments is a 26-minute training video produced by Emergency Film Group designed to provide training to emergency response, industry, and military personnel who may be called upon to work in protective clothing ensembles or who may work in hot weather or hot conditions during the course of their assigned duties.

"HEAT - Working in Hot Environments"

About heat related illnesses
Every year in the U.S. there are at least 3,000 heat-related illnesses and occupational injuries involving days lost from work. Emergency responders who work in protective clothing are especially vulnerable to heat injuries. It is important for personnel to learn about the risks of working in hot environments and how to prevent heat injuries.

About the program
”Heat! Working in Hot Environments” is designed for fire fighters, hazmat team members, bomb squads, military personnel who work in hot climates, those who work in protective clothing ensembles, and those who may work in hot weather or under hot conditions during the course of their assigned duties.

The program defines hot environments and lists the occupations where workers may be at risk. It explains how heat is transferred, how it builds up in the human body, and what conditions exacerbate heat buildup. The symptoms of dehydration, heat stress, heat exhaustion and heat stroke are portrayed. Specific heat issues relating to chemical protective clothing are explored, as well as other hazards associated with hot conditions. The program depicts responders using protective measures to avoid injury and undergoing medical monitoring before, during, and after operating in protective clothing. It also explains methods used to treat heat injuries, and demonstrates first aid for heat injury victims.

A Leader’s Guide is included with the package that includes objectives, ideas for activities, extra reading material and a copy of the script for reference.
