Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) are the chemicals most widely used in industry. Millions of tons are produced each year, and every day large quantities are transported in bulk by truck, barge and rail. The potential for an emergency involving one of these corrosives is very high. It is therefore critical that an effective training and emergency response program be set up at any facility that uses these hazardous chemicals. It is also the law.

"Sulfuric Acid and Hydrochloric Acid," the first program in the award-winning HazChem series, teaches fundamental lessons about identifying corrosive acids and the properties which make them hazardous to humans and the environment. It describes safe handling and storage of these chemicals, proper loading and off-loading procedures during transportation, and proper use of protective clothing. The program also covers steps to take in the event of an uncontrolled leak, spill or fire, including identifying the hazardous material involved, isolating the area, and assessing the dangers before taking action to control the incident. It discusses how the reactivity of acids will affect materials used to seal leaking containers, and what protective clothing to use. (26 minutes)

Other topics covered include:
• Emergency medical operations
• Diking to control spills
• Neutralization to control spills
• Vapor control
• Decontamination of persons and equipment
• Runoff water control
• When not to use water to fight a fire.

Each title in the HazChem series focuses on a different product or group of products. Programs combine footage of actual incidents with actionpacked, realistic training sequences. The programs are designed to provide training to persons who are expected to respond to an emergency involving these hazardous materials.

Currently there are 11 titles in the HazChem Series:
• Anhydrous Ammonia
• Benzene, Toluene & Xylene
• Chlorine
• Hazardous Waste
• Hydrogen Sulfide
• Inorganic Oxidizers
• Introduction to Hazardous Chemicals
• Pesticides
• Propane, Butane & Propylene
• Sodium Hydroxide & Potassium Hydroxide
• Sulfuric Acid & Hydrochloric Acid

HazChem programs have been the winners of numerous awards for both filmmaking excellence and technical content. Among the honors received by HazChem programs are the prestigious Cine Golden Eagle award, the Society for Technical Communication Award of Excellence, the Telly award, and the Silver Apple Award from the National Education Film and Video Festival.
