Hydrogen Sulfide
- DVD (VHS avail.)
Discusses poisonous gas and effects of exposure, air monitoring, ventilation operations, establishment of safe areas at work sites.

Price: $425.00

Characterized by its unique "rotten egg" odor, hydrogen sulfide is encountered in petroleum and other drilling operations, mining, sewers or any other operations that takes workers underground. In addition, about 10 million tons are produced each year in North America for use in manufacturing processes. H2S is a poisonous gas which can paralyze the respiratory system, quickly leading to death. It will ignite explosively when exposed to heat, flame or oxidizers. Workers who encounter hydrogen sulfide must be well trained in its hazard characteristics and safe work practices, and emergency responders who may respond to an incident involving H2S need to be trained in response procedures.

"Hydrogen Sulfide" tells where hydrogen sulfide is likely to be found and teaches basic safety procedures for working with this hazardous gas. It tells why odor cannot be relied on to detect H2S, describes symptoms of exposure, and tells about the short- and longterm health effects of contact. The program discusses safe handling, storage and transportation and covers protective clothing, continuous monitoring, safety alarms, containers, markings, and loading and unloading procedures. It stresses the need for compatible piping systems, as well as the need to continually control all possible ignition sources. A case study of an actual hydrogen sulfide incident involving over 300 response personnel and lasting 68 days is examined. Typical reasons for incidents are outlined. The program teaches the incident commander what he needs to know to decide whether to take aggressive action to control an incident, especially when fire is involved. Other topics covered include evacuation, medical operations for victims, ventilating to reduce vapors, use of water fog, neutralizing water spills, container failure, controlling runoff, cleanup operations & decon. 27 min. "Hydrogen Sulfide" is the winner of the CINE Golden Eagle award from the Council of International Non-Theatrical Events and was cited by the Festival International du Film & Video d'Enterprise
