Shipboard Familiarization: Know Your Duties, Know Your Ship
"It's Wise To Familiarize" is more than just a catchy phrase . It's the law! Make Shipboard Familiarization: Know Your Duties, Know Your Ship the first step in each new mariner's safety orientation. This new training video looks at the important areas onboard every ship a new mariner should know.
STCW95 now requires that all seafarers assigned to the ship for the first time are given a reasonable opportunity to become familiar with specific equipment and operating procedures of the ship concerned before being assigned to duties.
Shipboard Familiarization: Know Your Duties, Know Your Ship follows a typical newly assigned mariner who is introduced to his duties, equipment, and emergency procedures. It shows the mariner meeting his fellow crewmembers, locating and operating routine and emergency equipment, and becoming familiar with specific signs, symbols, and alarms. Shipboard Familiarization provides a reference point around which all future training can be conducted and is an important element on every ship's safety and training agenda.
In this video the US Coast Guard Port State Control officers tell what they look for to insure compliance with STCW95. A newly assigned mariner is shown what he needs to know for the safe exercise of his duties. Ship managers will discuss what they are doing to introduce seafarers to their ship.
