“Response To Illicit Drug Labs” is a video based training program for law enforcement, firefighters, hazmat teams and environmental response personnel who may be involved in a raid at an illegal lab, or who may unexpectedly discover a clandestine lab. It is available in both DVD and VHS.
The program examines the multiple dangers presented by illicit labs, the chemicals and equipment that are typically found at such labs and discusses the hazards and risks during extraction, conversion and synthesis processing operations. It discusses personal protective clothing and equipment that would be appropriate for the hazardous environment of a drug lab, and also covers decontamination issues and disposal of recovered hazardous waste.
“Response To Illicit Drug Labs” examines the various forms of methamphetamine, and discusses the abuse cycle and how it affects the human body. The program focuses on three different stages of labs: • Active lab - one that is in the process of manufacturing drugs; • Boxed lab - a facility that has the appropriate ingredients but is not currently running; and • Dump site - a site that is no longer in use but still has the potential to be creating chemical reactions due to discarded waste.
The methods for manufacturing meth are discussed, with tabletop demonstrations showing the hazards of chemical reactions during the various processes. The viewer learns how to recognize the presence of illicit drug labs when responding to a fire, explosion, or other type of incident. Proper procedures for fighting fires are outlined, including evacuation of the area and containing runoff. The program also discusses organizing a raid on an active lab, and appropriate termination activities.
